| Each fall, the Toronto Flute School invites guest teachers and sometimes performers to give masterclasses and demonstrations to all interested students. This event takes place over two days, and often culminates with a student concert.
As part of its 2002 Fall Workshop, the Toronto Flute School was pleased to present La Flûte Enchantée from Montreal in a recital of works by Bach, Rameau, Mozart, Bizet, Rossini and McCartney on Saturday, November 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Christ Church Deer Park. After the concert, TFS students were coached by the quartet, and by guest teacher, Kenichi Ueda. Masterclasses with Kenichi continued on Sunday.

For the past several years, we have invited flutist and Suzuki teacher-trainer Kenichi Ueda to give masterclasses to our students. Kenichi is a graduate of Dr. Suzuki's Talent Education Institute in Matsumoto, Japan where he studied with Toshio Takahashi who developed the Suzuki method for flute. We are all very fortunate that Kenichi and his wife Yuko have moved to London, Ontario, so that his visits to Toronto will continue in the future.

In addition to Kenichi's masterclasses, in 2000 we also had a Baroque performance practice afternoon on the second day of the workshop. Baroque flutist and recorder player Scott Paterson from the Royal Conservatory of Music gave a demonstration of Baroque ornamentation and improvisation. He and harpsichordist Stephanie Martin of the Arbour Oaks Trio also accompanied the members of the Baroque dance troupe La Belle Danse.
They began their presentation with a slide show on the history of Baroque dance and its importance in everyday life in that period. This was followed by a demonstration of several of the dances, all presented in period costumes and wigs. Two of the pieces they danced to are in the Suzuki repertoire, so the students could see what purpose this music was used for in its time.
The dancers finished by inviting 8 students onstage to learn how to dance the minuet -- quite an accomplishment! The workshop concluded with a concert including all of the dance movements from J.S. Bach's "Suite in B Minor".
